ASSOCIATION SECRETARY/GENERAL MANAGER

BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (BWHA)

The Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association (BWHA) is responsible for the management and promotion of women’s hockey in the greater Brisbane area, overseeing hockey competitions for over 3,200 players from 19 member clubs. It provides women, girls, and younger boys the opportunity to play field hockey from Under 7s through to Masters. BWHA manages elite representative teams and development programs across all levels for players, umpires, coaches, and technical officials.

The Association Secretary/General Manager (GM) represents BWHA and oversees the effective and efficient operations of the Association including governance, administration, financial management, leading staff and servicing its member clubs to ensure the delivery of high-quality participation and competition outcomes.

Working with key stakeholders the GM will ensure the effective generation of income streams via membership, sponsorship, and other related services ($1.5m+ pa). In addition, the role will oversee the management of facilities at Downey Park Windsor and neighbouring Rasey Park and contribute to the management of the Brisbane North Hockey Centre, Burringbar Park at Chermside.

Working closely with the Board, the Association’s staff, and a highly committed volunteer and stakeholder group, the GM will have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of the strategic and operational plans for BWHA. Regular liaison with the Board is essential, with open and clear communication regarding all relevant matters including governance, risk, financial reporting, and strategic issues management. The Association has five permanent staff, and it will be necessary for the GM to assist with many of the day-to-day activities of the organisation i.e., literally get their hands dirty, with no job too big or too small, doing ‘whatever it takes’ to get the job done.

To be considered for this position, you will be an experienced operations leader prepared to take ownership of the business, with a strong understanding of the amateur sport environment and its contribution to the local community. Your business acumen will be matched by your ability to identify and capitalise on opportunities to grow and expand the organisation and its offerings, including identifying and accessing opportunities to enhance projects and programs through sponsorship, strategic partnerships, and grant opportunities.

A track record of successfully managing a like-sized business would be ideal, possibly within sport or related service industry, using your strategic, financial, and commercial acumen to best service the association and its members. As a dynamic and influential leader, you will be well versed in managing a variety of stakeholder relationships which in this role will include BWHA staff, Brisbane Hockey Association (that runs men’s hockey in Brisbane), member clubs, volunteers, local and state governments, and Hockey Queensland.

Whilst a background in, or passion for hockey, would be beneficial, more importantly you will be committed to providing strong foundations for the growth and success of our sport throughout greater Brisbane.
